Thank you to all who made our most recent annual subMIT workshop a success! The workshop closed IAP out in style with user contributions from across the Physics Department. In fact, in the series of subMIT workshops over the last years we note a steady increase in involvement, which has lead to a reduction of the more general sessions and an increase in the variety of presentations of applications which cover a wider range of research topics in the department.

The popular morning tutorial session started with the general overview, where also the most important recent upgrade to subMIT–moving to Alma 9–was discussed. The upgrade is close, but not yet completed with details discussed in the talk by Marianne Moore. The morning session also included the usual “Getting Started” tutorials by the subMIT project team followed by a SLURM/HTCondor batch jobs tutorial for users ready to take their computation to the next level. Then subMIT users  Deep Chatterjee (MKI: LIGO) and Blaise Delaney (LNS: LHCb) kicked off the new addition to the workshop: user-given tutorials.  Audience members followed these tutorials live at the session and later at their convenience on subMIT resources.  This proved to be a popular and successful venture in facilitating knowledge-sharing between subMIT users.

An interesting new perspective on the general management of computing systems was delivered by Lindsey Gray from Fermilab in his presentation, discussing the use of OpenShift, which builds upon kubernetes (K8s) to provide additional features. This might be a model the management of subMIT might be moving towards.
