The subMIT hardware was originally planned to be installed at Bates laboratory, in Middleton a 40 minutes car ride from the main MIT campus. Bates is home to the High Performance Research Computing Facility (HPRCF). SubMIT moved to the HPRCF mostly because of its strong network connection to CERN. With an extension of the data storage and some more GPU machine installations it became clear that running subMIT on campus in Building 24 would be much preferred, because of the better access and direct support of the subMIT project team, but the network connection to the external world was too weak.

Once the 100 Gb/sec connectivity to Building 24 was established the plan to move subMIT to campus took shape. Finally in mid August we completed the move of the last subMIT servers to campus. The critical services were first moved off the machines that had to be relocated to machines already installed in Building 24 and thus no significant downtime in terms of capabilities was needed to complete the move.

Some of the relocated machines have not yet been fully brought back and added to the system but this should be completed by tomorrow or the end of the week.
