On June 13, 2023, two days ago, AMD launched the EPYC Bergamo, 128 cores per socket and thus 1024 threads per 1U as a new record in high density ‘CPU’ computing. This is particularly important for non-GPU applications as it increases the amount of computing one can pull out of a given rack space. The way that more cores are possible on the chip is by trading some of the L3 cache for cores. It will be interesting to see how this affects the overall performance: HEP Score not yet known.

We will follow this development closely: prices for the ‘old’ chips might drop, performance tests for HEP type applications in terms of CPU power and electrical power usage should become available and might influence our future purchases.
