Thank you to all who made the annual subMIT IAP workshop a success: from engaged audience members, to users who contributed talks, and of course to the ever-dedicated project team! Attendees ranging from students to faculty invested their time last Thursday in finding ways to break down barriers and increase their own computational capabilities … as well as those of their colleagues. Audience members who came bearing questions, left with answers, eager to try out their new expanded workflow solutions. It will be exciting to see what new future research results arise aided by the exchange of information at the workshop!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was a new year and new management as the new Project Team Lead, David Walter, kicked off the workshop with an overview of the system and changes over the past year. With the completed move to building 24, the completed operating system upgrade, and completed Ceph filesystem migration, there was much to cover. Project Team Co-Deputies Mariarosaria D\u2019Alfonso and Matt Heine gave overviews of the resources subMIT has to offer and how to access them. Then the morning was rounded out with a series of informational sessions & tutorials by Project Team members Xuejian (Jacob) Shen, Marianne Moore, Luca Lavezzo, and Zhangqier Wang in managing software (including the much-requested container tutorial) and unleashing the power of batch jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After lunch, the subMIT users stepped up to the plate with an afternoon packed with a diversity of physics and computational workflows and tools. Ranging from nuclear physics to biophysics, condensed matter to cosmology, theory to experiment, the wide range of physics, computational techniques, and tools covered by the user-contributed talks defies summary in this news article. Techniques from machine learning to Monte Carlo were showcased, and several users demonstrated scripts they wrote to harness the power accessed via subMIT. Third-party tools were also showcased by users: portable, reproducible code via singularity containers and the power of easy automatic parallelization via Dask, just to name a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
